Reducing Human-Elephant Conflict in Bakingili, Southwest Region of Cameroon

Love Lead actively volunteered with Meg Wah to address the growing human-elephant conflict in the Bakingili community.
This project was implemented to address the increasing human-elephant conflict in the Bakingili community, where elephants have been encroaching on farmlands and destroying crops. In response to these challenges, the project aimed to provide alternative livelihood options to reduce the community’s dependence on forest-based agriculture.

A key component of the initiative involved training local community members in cassava production and transformation, empowering them to establish income-generating activities within their immediate surroundings. By promoting cassava-based livelihoods closer to the community, the project discouraged deeper incursions into elephant habitats, thereby helping to preserve critical forest ecosystems and reduce habitat fragmentation.

Additionally, this strategy was designed to enhance the safety of local residents by minimizing their exposure to elephant attacks, which often occur when people enter the forest for farming or resource collection. Through this dual approach—livelihood support and conservation awareness—the project contributed to both human well-being and wildlife protection.

This initiative was supported by World Centric in collaboration with Meg Wah, and implemented in 2023.
